A BREIF HISTORY OF BABE’S BREWHOUSE
By the time ground broke in 2001, Babe’s Brewhouse was 3rd.in line of Don Callender’s growing brewery vision. Behind the now defunct Santa Fe Hops Brewhouse in Santa Fe Springs, Ca.(1998 to 2001) and P.H.Woods Bar-B-Que & Brewery in Moreno Valley,Ca.(1999 to November 2010) Don would spare no expense for his new BBQ/Brewery concept.
Coming in at just over a half million dollars, Babe’s Brewhouse is a beautiful custom JV Northwest 10 bbl. Brew system with hand hammered aged cooper exterior,4 Fermenters and 5 Serving tanks. Its monstrous functioning malt silo stands tall next to the restaurant’s entrance and holds 15,000 lbs of malt.
Babe’s started competing in beer competitions in 2002/2003 winning 3 medals at the Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA) and 5 medals at the Los Angeles County Fair Commercial Beer Competition. In 2004 Don Callender pulled the plug on competing in beer competitions to focus more the Bar-B-Que concept. In 2009 Babe’s entered back in to the beer competition ring winning 4 medals at the 2009 Los Angeles International Commercial Beer Competition taking a Gold medal in the Black Lager category besting beer giant Samuel Adams who took Silver in that category. In 2010 Babe’s did it again, taking 4 Medals at the Los Angeles International Commercial Beer Competition including a Gold medal for the Babe’s 29 Palms Pale Ale in the Classic English Pale Ale category besting beer giant Samuel Adams once again who took Silver in that category. This brings the medal count to 8 in two years for this international competition.
Babe’s continues to craft brew beers that coincide with the unique desert climate and welcomes all craft brew enthusiasts. Brewery tours are welcome 11 am to 4 pm. December to June closed Wednesday & Thursday, July to November closed Sunday & Monday. Call ahead for groups of 8 or more. Cheers!
